The web-based continuing education activity will examine smoking cessation in primary care, with the goal of impacting physicians' clinical practices regarding smoking cessation counseling and use of valuable resources such as "Quitlines". It will also serve to open the door to improved patient-provider communication about smoking cessation.

The web-based video and PowerPoint slide program features a presentation from Richard Wender, MD, as well as conversational pieces including: 1) a healthcare professional panel/Q&A format, and, 2) "Real life" situations, such as a physician-patient office visit and follow-up visit, in the context of smoking cessation efforts.

Learning Objectives:

1) To discuss smoking as a chronic condition that requires the use of a comprehensive intervention plan and follow-up care utilizing smoking cessation resources to deal with the behavioral and cognitive issues associated with tobacco dependence.

2) To examine the gaps between the U.S. Public Health Service’s clinical practice guidelines regarding tobacco use, specifically the 5 A’s clinical intervention, at each physician-patient encounter.

3) To assess the value and effectiveness of smoking cessation resources, specifically telephone smoking cessation counseling programs (Quitline).

4) To discuss the methods and components of the Pennsylvania Free Quitline and how to incorporate this resource into the patient office visit.

5) To examine physician practices regarding smoking cessation, relating to key components of behavior modification theory and patient-provider communication.
